IRC awards members a number of annual perpetual trophies, which are replaced by "keeper" plaques when returned for next year's awarding. This tradition was started when our club was still called Nanaimo Sports Car Club, continued when we became NSCC - Island Rallysport, and continues to this day.
They are awarded based on happenings during the current year, and are presented at the IRC Awards Night.

Weather, illness, and work stopped 7 people from attending, but we still had terrific fun with 13 people in attendance. Glyn Trafford was our MC, and the food, which was absolutely out of this world awesome, was personally created by Tanya Thompson. The appreciation wasn't limited to the food however, with many thanks expressed for the contributions to rallysport and IRC by Michael Mason & Co. Inc. and LeeMar Manufacturing. The good times started to come to a close just before midnight, after nearly 7 hours of fun.

2008: IRC recognizes outstanding members at Awards Dinner

On Sunday night, December 7, the membership of the Island Rallysport Club honored a number of their members with awards. I was lucky enough to get the Appreciation Award, and ironically, unlucky enough to get the Hard Lucky Trophy. This trophy has been awarded every year since it was first presented to George Benson in 1970. Glyn Trafford was honored for his work on Crestline Trail Rally, getting the Rallymaster Award, and for her incredible work for the same event, Tanya Thompson was presented with the Dedication Award. Glyn took the opportunity to personally thank Steve Batchelor of Michael Mason & Co. Ltd. for his sponsorship of Crestline Trail Rally, and for his interest in making rallysport better than ever. For his generous and spontaneous help servicing for a performance rally team (not even IRC members), Jeff Bain was acclaimed and received the Sportsmanship Award.

A highlight of this segment of the awards came when
Gil Stuart was shown that his amazing and long lasting dedication to rallysport has not gone unnoticed. Not only was Gil awarded the Rally Cup, but was also presented with a special "Order of the Isle" plaque, to several rounds of congratulatory applause.

The next set of awards are all based on member participation in our club events, which range from solo, to pavement rally, to gravel rally. The 2008 Novice Driver award went to
Robert Gobright, and the Novice Navigator award went to Tristan Barnard. Not wanting to stop there, Tristan also managed to collect the Overall Rally award. To cap it all off, IRC was happy to be able to award Gavin Aitken not only the Solo award, for his performance in our Rally Crosses, but also the Overall. This award requires not only rallying skill, but also skill at slalom, and celebrates excellence and diversity.

Congratulations to you all, and a big thank-you to
Janie Ransom and John Sim for setting up the lovely dinner and entertaining socializing beforehand.

Bart Vogelzang,
IRC President
