Awards Night for IRC (Dec 4/10)

Members of IRC, and guests, converged on the Funky Bubble Cafe in downtown Duncan late Saturday evening. They gathered together to have fun, challenge each other with funky games, and have a terrific buffet. Oh, yes, and have the awards presentations.

Everyone had a chance to challenge others to vie for the neat prizes, but unfortunately this writer is a klutz who couldn't win one challenge. Each win was totalled onto a giant white board spread sheet, and the person with the most wins in each category (game) was the winner.

The pool table was ruled by Dave McKenzie, with Phil Wild dominating foos ball. For a while it looked like Gil Stuart was going to take the Old Man Shuffleboard, but Jay Young grabbed it away from Gil with his finessing touch. Totally blowing everyone out of the air, so to speak, was the air hockey grand champion, Tristan Barnard, with a staggering 10 wins. Obviously navigating in TSD isn't the only thing he's good at. Congratulations to all the winners, and a terrific thank-you to both Discovery Honda and John Horgan for your generous donations of many of our prizes.

The IRC Rally Director, Glyn Trafford, did the honours and presented this year's slate of awards. Some years we have more awards given out, as they are event dependent, but this year the variety of the events were limited in scope.

Tanya Thompson was presented with the Appreciation award for all she has done for IRC.

Sadly, the Hard Luck award isn't the nicest thing to get, and this year it was Kevin Aartsen's turn, for some of his bad luck with his car breaking during rally cross events.

Fortunately for Kevin, his hard luck didn't stop him from handily trouncing the other entrants, so he was also awarded the Rally Cross award, being only the second person to get this new award, after Shane Anderson's 2009 win.

Jay Young continued his theme of superb sportsmanship during competitions, and garnered the Sportsmanship award for the second year in a row.

Obviously our members are very much aware of how much effort Phil Wild puts into working for the club, events, and helping entrants, since they awarded him the Dedication award. It was shortly followed by the coveted Rally Cup.

Bart Vogelzang received the Rallymaster award this year, and, as Glyn said, it was almost a forgone conclusion as there was on one rally this year.

This report would not be complete without mentioning the great food and careful attention paid to us by the staff of the Funky Bubble Cafe, on Station Street in Duncan. Thank-you for a great time and excellent service.
